The Lure of Italy: Renaissance Ideals in the Prints of Albrecht Dürer Dr. John Collins, Assistant Curator, Prints & Drawings, National Gallery of Canada Thursday, September 25, 7 pm
Is Man really the measure of all things, as Protagoras claimed and Italian theorists reiterated almost 2000 years later? Albrecht Dürer must have thought so, and made several journeys to Italy in the sixteenth century to find out. There he absorbed the ideas, values and representational techniques of the Renaissance. Not only was he a great master in his own right, but he became a crucial conduit, transposing the ‘rebirth’ of Classical genius to Northern Europe.
