Edmonton, A.B. - The Art Gallery of Alberta presents small, from January 19-March 24, 2008, featuring new works by five artists who address ideas of scale.
Over the last 20 years, the concept of scale has warped from big shoulder pads and immersive art installations, to tiny technologies and mini-cars. In an age where ‘nano’ is the buzzword of the day, the Art Gallery of Alberta’s new exhibition challenges what ‘small’ means in the 21st century.
The Art Gallery of Alberta is pleased to present small, from January 19–March 24, 2008. small features five artists who each construe their own idea of what scale means: Shane Krepakevich abstractly plots out important events in his life; Allan Ball and Kimberly Mair give the inconsequential meaning through photography and captions; Craig Le Blanc reduces monumental forms to miniature size; Harold Pearse’s sketchbooks become a graphic testament to years of artistic practice, Bonnie Fan glimpses into the mysterious lives of birds and a single carbon nano-tube redefines the finite nature of size.
small is accompanied by a pamphlet essay and is curated by Marcus Miller, Assistant Curator and Public Programming Manager. This is the inaugural exhibition in the newly-named RBC New Works Gallery.
