Edmonton, A.B. - The Art Gallery of Alberta is proud to present GENERATION, on display from January 19-March 24, 2008. GENERATION features nine contemporary artists from Canada and the United States whose work incorporates the images, ideas, and anxieties of North American youth. This exhibition is a fresh look at the experience of youth in the 21st century, the life that is created for them and the life they create for themselves.
Over the course of the last century teen culture has become the pre-dominant focus of popular culture and in recent years, teenagers have become an incredible force within all areas of society. GENERATION addresses issues of today’s youth through installation, painting, photography, and film.
Five of the artists in GENERATION will be speaking about their work during HSBC All Day Saturday on January 19 at 2:00 pm. Related programming for this event includes Daniel Barrow’s Winnipeg Babysitter (January 16 at Metro Cinema), Imagining WoW, an en-masse gaming event (February 9), and Mind the Gap: A Think Tank on the Culture of Youth (March 15). This exhibition is curated by Catherine Crowston, Chieft Curator and Deputy Director for the Art Gallery of Alberta.
