The Art Gallery of Alberta is pleased to present Seeing Through Modernism: Edmonton 1970–1985, from March 1–May 4, 2008. This exhibition features the work of over 30 artists and traces the development and continuation of a modernist tradition in Edmonton in the 1970s and 1980s.
During this time, Edmonton was recognized internationally as a centre for the creation and collection of modernist painting and sculpture. In particular, the exhibition traces the relationship between the work produced by the faculty at the University of Alberta’s Department of Art and Design and the strong support of modern art by The Edmonton Art Gallery under the curatorial leadership of Karen Wilkin and Terry Fenton. Seeing Through Modernism also examines the development of important sites of critique and opposition, specifically the formation of the artist-run centre Latitude 53 in 1973 and the establishment of the Society of Northern Alberta Print Artists (SNAP) in 1982.
This exhibition is curated by Dr. Anne Whitelaw, Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta. She is currently co-editing a reader on 20th Century Visual Arts in Canada for Oxford University Press. In 2006 she curated the exhibition The Edmonton Art Gallery: Building a Collection at the AGA.
Exhibition runs: March 1-May 4, 2008
