Edmonton, AB— Feb 21 2008— The Imperial Oil Foundation will be making a public announcement of a $300,000 donation to the Art Gallery of Alberta’s New Vision expansion, on Feb 29th at 7pm at the AGA’s opening reception of two new exhibitions, Seeing Through Modernism: Edmonton 1970 – 1985 and Awakening: The Art of iHuman. This event is open to the media. This significant donation reflects Imperial Oil Foundation’s increased and ongoing educational support of the School Tour and Studio Program, and includes naming a classroom in the new building’s expanded Educational Centre, to open in 2009.
“This donation will be used to promote and expand the gallery's education programs,” says Monica Samper, President, Imperial Oil Foundation. “These are innovative programs that will help to bring the world of art to life for young people through tours and hands-on projects at the gallery. Our commitment to the new art gallery maintains and builds on our commitment to provide further education opportunities.”
“Imperial Oil has been a strong supporter of the AGA’s educational programs for many years,” says AGA Executive Director Tony Luppino, “and their new commitment reinforces their belief in the value of the arts in building better societies. Their contribution makes it possible to ensure that our programs are accessible to all members of our community.”
With a goal to being an active member of the community and to building a life-long learning system in Canada that ranks among the best in the world, Imperial Oil Limited has been contributing to communities across Canada for the past 126 years. Imperial Oil contributed more than $11 million to enhance the well-being of communities across Canada in 2007, building on a tradition of corporate giving that began with the company's inception in 1880. Supporting organizations where we live and work, the company emphasizes investment in education of math and sciences, environment, and civic and community programs where we have employees or business operations.
The New Vision building of the Art Gallery of Alberta will be a greatly expanded 85,000 square foot premier presentation venue for international and Canadian art, education, and scholarship. The gallery in itself will be a work of art that will complement and complete the cultural precinct surrounding Sir Winston Churchill Square and solidify Alberta’s Capital as a world-class city, epitomizing Edmonton’s 2007 Cultural Capital of Canada designation. The new building designed by Los Angeles architect Randall Stout will be an icon of architecture for Alberta and a centre of excellence for visual art in Western Canada. The New Vision capital campaign moves forward with great progress with commitments from private and corporate donors and all orders of government, reaching $82 million of the required $88 million.
