The Art Gallery of Alberta is proud to present the Seeing Through Edmonton lecture series. These lectures are hosted in partnership with the University of Alberta and complement the AGA’s current exhibition Seeing Through Modernism: Edmonton 1970 -1985 (March 1 – May 4, 2008). These three lectures will address issues surrounding Modernism in a distinctive way.
Karen Wilkin Lecture: “Life After Formalism”
Thursday, March 20, 7 pm
Karen Wilkin was Curator of The Edmonton Art Gallery from 1971-1978, and was responsible for the acquisition of some of the most significant modernist artworks in its collection. Wilkin is currently a Director of the Triangle Arts Association, which organizes programs and residencies for international artists.
Roald Nasgaard
Thursday, April 10, 7pm
Roald Nasgaard is Professor of Art History and Chair of the Art Department at Florida State University. Until 1993 he served as Chief Curator at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Nasgaard recently released his book Abstract Painting in Canada, a comprehensive survey that spans decades of artistic production across the country. Copies will be available at the lecture for sale and signing.
Anne Whitelaw Lecture

Dr. Anne Whitelaw is the curator of the exhibition Seeing Through Modernism: Edmonton 1970 – 1985 (AGA, March 1 – May 4, 2008), and Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta. Dr. Whitelaw is currently writing a book on the collecting practices of the Art Gallery of Alberta and is co-editing a reader on the history of twentieth-century visual art in Canada for Oxford University Press.
